What Is a Google Premier Partner and Why Does It Matter?

By Jason Stern  ·  November 15, 2025  ·  Google Premier Partner, Enlightened Media

Only the top 3% of Google Ads agencies qualify for Premier Partner status. Here’s what the designation actually means, how Google awards it, and how to use it correctly when evaluating agencies.

What Google Premier Partner Status Actually Means

Google runs a tiered partner program for agencies and individual specialists who manage Google Ads accounts. The tiers are: no designation, Google Partner, and Google Premier Partner. Premier Partner is the highest tier and is awarded only to the top 3% of participating agencies in each country.

The criteria Google uses to determine Premier Partner status change periodically, but consistently include: a minimum managed spend threshold (proving the agency manages substantial ad budgets), strong campaign optimization scores, client growth metrics, and certifications across Google’s product suite.

Premier Partner status is re-evaluated by Google annually. It’s not a certification you earn once and keep forever — an agency that was a Premier Partner in 2022 may not be one in 2024 if their performance metrics or spend requirements slip.

What Google Premier Partner Status Is Not

It is not a guarantee of quality. The criteria are primarily quantitative — spend managed, account growth, certification completion. An agency can meet all of these thresholds while still doing mediocre work for clients.

It is not the same as being certified. Google Ads certifications are individual — specific people pass exams to become certified in Search, Display, Shopping, Video, and other products. Premier Partner status is awarded to the agency entity based on aggregate performance, not just certifications.

It does not mean Google endorses the agency’s specific approach or results. Google does not audit agencies for quality of client outcomes. The partner program is about Google’s business metrics, not your business results.

Why Premier Partner Status Is Still Worth Caring About

As a filter, Premier Partner status removes the bottom tier of agencies. It means the agency has managed enough spend, maintained enough client accounts, and kept enough people certified that Google recognizes them in the top 3%. That’s a meaningful floor.

Premier Partners get access to Google account representatives, beta features before general release, and dedicated support channels. For clients, this means your agency has a direct line to Google when something breaks or a new feature could benefit your campaigns.

The designation is a starting point for evaluation, not an ending point. Use it to filter out the bottom, then do the real diligence: who manages your account, what’s their track record, and can they explain their strategy clearly.

How to Verify an Agency’s Premier Partner Status

Google maintains a public partner directory at ads.google.com/intl/en_us/home/partners/find-a-partner/. You can search by agency name, location, and specialty to verify current status. If an agency claims Premier Partner status but isn’t in the directory, they’re misrepresenting themselves.

Enlightened Media is a verified Google Premier Partner. You can confirm our status in the Google partner directory. Premier Partner status is one piece of a larger picture — alongside 15+ years of experience, a 96% client retention rate, and Jason Stern personally managing every account.
