How to Hire a Google Ads Agency: What to Look for, What to Avoid
By Jason Stern · September 15, 2025 · Google Premier Partner, Enlightened Media
Most businesses hire the wrong Google Ads agency for the right reasons. They pick the one with the best pitch, the most impressive deck, and the most confident guarantees. Here’s how to avoid that mistake and what to actually look for.
The #1 Thing Most Businesses Get Wrong When Hiring
They hire based on the pitch, not the process. A smooth sales call and a polished deck are not evidence that an agency knows how to manage Google Ads. They’re evidence that the agency knows how to sell itself.
The right question to ask before signing anything: Who specifically will manage my account? Not “your team” — the specific person. What are their credentials? How many accounts do they personally manage? When you call with a question, who picks up?
Most Google Ads agencies assign your account to a junior analyst managing 40–80 other accounts. The senior person who sold you the service moves on to the next pitch. This is the industry standard, not the exception.
What to Look for in a Google Ads Agency
Google Premier Partner status. Only the top 3% of Google Ads agencies earn this. It requires meeting Google’s thresholds for ad spend, client growth, and product certifications. It’s not a guarantee of quality, but it’s a meaningful filter. Any agency worth hiring should be at least a Google Partner.
Transparent reporting. You should have access to your own Google Ads account at all times. If an agency resists this or “manages your account” from their own MCC without giving you access, walk away. Your account belongs to you.
Clear pricing. Most agencies charge a flat monthly management fee, a percentage of ad spend, or both. Get it in writing. Understand what’s included: campaign setup, keyword research, ad copy, bid management, conversion tracking, reporting. Ask specifically what happens if you leave — do you keep the account and all the work done in it?
Verifiable results. Ask for case studies from clients in your industry or a similar one. Ask for a reference you can actually call. Be skeptical of generic “results” screenshots without context — any number looks good without knowing what was spent to achieve it.
Red Flags That Should Make You Walk Away
They guarantee specific results. Google Ads is an auction. No one can guarantee a cost per lead, a click-through rate, or a ROAS. Anyone who does is either lying or doesn’t understand how the platform works.
They don’t ask about your business before proposing a budget. A legitimate Google Ads agency needs to understand your margins, your conversion rate, your sales cycle, and your competitive landscape before recommending ad spend. A proposal that comes back in 24 hours with a budget recommendation and no discovery call is a template, not a strategy.
They own your account. Your Google Ads account should live in your own Google account, not theirs. If they insist on running campaigns from their MCC and you can’t access the data independently, you are renting access to your own campaigns.
No dedicated specialist. If the answer to “who manages my account” is “our team,” that means everyone and no one. You want a named specialist with verifiable credentials who is accountable for your results.
The Questions to Ask Before You Sign
1. Who specifically will manage my account? Name, credentials, how many accounts they manage.
2. Will I have full access to my Google Ads account at all times? And what happens to the account if we end the relationship?
3. How do you structure campaigns? Ask them to walk you through their approach to match types, ad groups, and bid strategy. Vague answers mean they’re winging it.
4. How do you track conversions? If they can’t explain how they verify that their campaigns are generating actual leads or sales — not just clicks — they’re optimizing for the wrong thing.
5. What are your management fees and what’s included? Get it in writing with a clear scope of work.
The Bottom Line
Hiring a Google Ads agency is not complicated if you focus on accountability over polish. The agency that gives you direct access to your account, names the specific person managing it, shows you verifiable results from real clients, and explains their process clearly in plain English — that’s the right agency.
