Why It Works

Performance Max Agency.
Done Right.

Performance Max goes wrong when it is treated as autopilot. It optimizes to whatever conversion is set as primary, so a page view or call click becomes its whole definition of success. Left unguarded, it leans on branded searches and remarketing audiences that would have converted anyway, then claims the credit. Doing it right means clean goals first, brand exclusions, strong assets and signals, and a Search campaign beside it so you can tell new demand from recycled demand.

Goals PMax Can Trust

PMax optimizes to whatever is marked primary. We make sure that means real purchases, qualified calls, and confirmed forms, not page views or button clicks.

Brand Traffic Excluded

Brand exclusions and negative keywords keep PMax from claiming customers already searching your name, so its reported conversions reflect demand it actually found.

Performance Max Management

How We Manage Performance Max Campaigns

Performance Max is powerful and opaque in equal measure. One campaign can reach Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps, and it can also spend heavily on traffic you already owned. Here is how we run it: what it does well and badly, how asset groups and audience signals work, brand exclusions and URL controls, conversion goal hygiene, running it alongside Search, and when to skip it entirely.

What Performance Max Is Good and Bad At

PMax is strongest for online stores with a healthy product feed and solid purchase data, and for lead gen accounts with plenty of clean conversions. It can find buyers across channels that would take several campaigns to cover by hand, and it often surfaces queries and placements a keyword list would miss. When the conversion signal is strong and the budget is large enough to test, it can scale efficiently.

It is weaker at control and transparency. You get limited say over which channels get budget, and reporting, while better than it was, still shows less than a Search campaign. It tends to favor the easiest conversions, which often means brand searches, returning visitors, and remarketing audiences. On thin data it can spend on low quality Display and video placements. Knowing those tendencies is a large part of managing it well.

Asset Groups and Audience Signals

Asset groups are the closest thing PMax has to ad groups. Each one should cover a single product category, service, or audience theme, with headlines, descriptions, images, logos, and video that match it. One catch-all asset group for an entire business mixes messages and makes it impossible to tell which offer is working. For e-commerce, we usually split asset groups by product category or margin using listing groups from the feed.

Audience signals tell PMax where to start looking, not where to stay. Your customer lists, website visitors, and custom segments built from the searches your buyers make give it a head start, but it will expand beyond them. That is why signals should describe your actual buyers, not everyone vaguely related. Supplying real video matters too, because without it Google may generate its own video assets from your images.

Brand Exclusions, Search Themes and Final URLs

Brand exclusions stop PMax from serving on searches for your own business name across Search and Shopping, which is where it most often inflates results. We pair them with a dedicated brand Search campaign so you still appear for your name at a controlled cost. Google now supports negative keywords for PMax as well, and we use them for irrelevant themes, unwanted competitor names, and job or free searches.

Search themes let you tell PMax about queries you want it to consider, which helps new campaigns and new services with no history. Final URL expansion is the setting that lets Google send traffic to any page on your site and tailor headlines to match. For lead gen it can send ad clicks to blog posts and careers pages, so we usually turn it off or add URL exclusions for pages that should never receive paid traffic.

Conversion Goal Hygiene

Performance Max optimizes to whatever conversion actions are set as primary for the campaign, and it does so aggressively. If a page view, an add to cart, or a click on a phone number is primary, PMax will find large numbers of cheap people who do exactly that and nothing more. Before any PMax campaign launches, we audit every conversion action, set real purchases, qualified calls, and confirmed forms as primary, and demote the rest.

Values matter too. For stores, purchase values should come through accurately and consistently. For lead gen, assigning different values to calls, forms, and qualified leads lets value based bidding favor what earns money. Where possible we import offline conversions from your CRM so PMax learns which leads closed. Clean goals do more for PMax than any asset or signal change, and they are the first thing we check.

Running PMax Alongside Search

PMax and Search can run in the same account, and usually should. When a search query is identical to a keyword in a Search campaign, Search generally takes priority. Otherwise the two compete on ad rank. We keep Search campaigns on your highest intent and brand terms with exact and phrase match, which keeps the queries that matter most under direct control while PMax explores beyond them.

Running both also gives you a benchmark. If PMax reports a lower cost per conversion than Search, we check where those conversions came from using channel and search term reporting, brand exclusion impact, and new versus returning customer data. Sometimes PMax is finding real new demand. Sometimes it is collecting credit for customers Search or your brand would have won anyway. The budget split follows that answer.

When Not to Use Performance Max

Skip PMax, or wait, when the budget is small. A campaign spreading a modest daily budget across every Google channel rarely gathers enough conversions in any of them to learn, and the spend thins out across Display and video. For most small local service businesses, tightly managed Search campaigns, possibly alongside Local Services Ads, are the stronger starting point until conversion volume grows.

Also wait when tracking is weak. PMax with broken or inflated conversion data scales the problem across every channel at once. The same goes for businesses with strict lead qualification needs and no offline conversion feedback, and for stores with a messy product feed full of disapprovals. Fix the foundation first. Once conversions are clean and volume is steady, PMax has something real to learn from and can be tested properly.

Performance Max Agency FAQ

Common Questions About
Performance Max Agency.

Enlightened Media's management starts at $500 per month, with no setup fees and no long-term contracts. Ad spend is separate and paid directly to Google from your own card. Performance Max is managed as part of the whole account, alongside Search, Shopping, and other campaigns, and the fee depends on how many campaigns, product lines, and locations the account needs.
Yes. Enlightened Media is based in New Orleans and manages Performance Max campaigns for online stores and service businesses nationwide. All the work happens inside your own Google Ads account, so location does not matter. Targeting, schedules, and conversion settings are configured for your market, and Jason responds to clients within 1 business hour.
Neither is better in general. Performance Max reaches more channels and suits stores with good product feeds and accounts with plenty of clean conversion data. Search gives far more control over queries and is usually stronger for small budgets and high intent service searches. Most accounts that use PMax should run Search beside it, so the two can be compared honestly.
Apply brand exclusions to the PMax campaign, which stop it from serving on searches for your business name in Search and Shopping. Add negative keywords for brand variations if needed, then run a separate brand Search campaign so you still show for your name at a controlled cost. Check search term reporting afterward to confirm brand traffic has actually dropped.
Usually because the form conversion fires on any submission and PMax has learned that cheap Display and partner placements produce plenty of them. Fixes include form validation and honeypot fields, counting only confirmed submissions, importing qualified lead data from your CRM, turning off final URL expansion, and reviewing placement reporting. If spam continues, PMax may not be the right fit for that account yet.
Enough to produce a steady flow of conversions every week, which depends on your cost per conversion. A budget that yields a handful of conversions a month spreads too thin across channels for PMax to learn well. In that case tightly managed Search campaigns usually make more sense. We size budgets from your own conversion costs rather than a fixed rule.
Yes, and in most accounts they should. When a search query is identical to a keyword in a Search campaign, Search generally takes priority. Otherwise the two compete on ad rank. Keeping brand and top intent keywords in Search gives you direct control and a benchmark, while PMax explores other queries and channels. We watch for overlap and adjust budgets based on what each produces.
