Google Ads vs. SEO: Which Should You Invest in First?

By Jason Stern  ·  December 1, 2025  ·  Google Premier Partner, Enlightened Media

Should you invest your marketing budget in Google Ads or SEO? The honest answer depends entirely on your timeline, your market, and what you can afford to wait for. Here’s how to think about it.

The Core Difference

Google Ads and SEO both generate traffic from Google. That’s where the similarity ends. Google Ads is paid — you bid for placement in the sponsored results and pay per click. SEO is earned — you optimize your site and content to rank in the organic results below the ads.

Google Ads generates traffic immediately. You set up a campaign today and you can have clicks by tomorrow. SEO takes months — typically 6–18 months before you see meaningful traffic from a new site or a new set of target keywords.

Google Ads stops the moment you stop paying. SEO compounds — the rankings you build continue generating traffic even when you’re not actively working on them, up to a point.

When to Invest in Google Ads First

You need leads now. If you need revenue to fund further growth, paid search is the right first investment. Google Ads can generate qualified leads within days of launch with properly configured campaigns.

Your market is highly competitive in organic search. For industries like personal injury law, Google Ads agencies, or dental implants, the first page of organic results is dominated by high-authority sites with years of backlinks. Ranking organically takes years. Paid search gets you in front of buyers now.

You’re testing a new market or offer. Google Ads gives you real data on what search terms convert for your business before you invest in building content and links around those terms.

Your average deal value is high enough to support the cost per lead. If a new client is worth $5,000 and Google Ads generates leads at $150 each, the math works clearly. If a new client is worth $200, the math may not.

When to Invest in SEO First

You have time and a long-term orientation. If you don’t need leads in the next 90 days and you’re building a business for the long term, SEO compounds in a way that paid search doesn’t.

Your product or service is researched, not emergency-driven. People don’t research emergency plumbers. They do research software platforms, B2B vendors, and complex professional services. Informational content and long-form SEO work better for research-phase buyers.

Your market has lower competition in organic search. In less competitive niches, a few months of solid SEO can generate meaningful organic traffic. The barrier to entry is lower than in high-competition markets.

The Honest Answer: Both, in the Right Order

For most service businesses, the right sequence is: Google Ads first, SEO as a parallel investment. Start Google Ads to generate revenue now. Use the conversion data from your campaigns to inform which keywords and pages to optimize for SEO.

Google Ads tells you what actually converts. SEO lets you capture that intent without paying per click. They’re not competing strategies — they’re complementary ones. The paid search data from a well-managed Google Ads account is some of the most valuable input a good SEO strategy can have.
