"Near Me" Keywords in Google Ads: How to Target Local Search Intent

Near me searches are among the highest-converting query types in Google Ads. Here’s how service businesses should be targeting local intent — and the mistakes that waste budget on it.

Why Near Me Searches Matter for Google Ads

Searches like "Google Ads agency near me," "PPC specialist near me," and "pay per click company near me" are high-intent, low-competition compared to their generic equivalents. The person adding "near me" is further along in their decision process — they’ve decided they want help, they’re just choosing who.

For service businesses, near-me intent is often the highest-converting traffic segment in a Google Ads account. A plumber getting 20 clicks from 'emergency plumber near me' will see dramatically better conversion rates than 20 clicks from 'how to fix a burst pipe.'

How Google Handles Near Me Searches

Google doesn’t require you to bid on 'near me' as a keyword. The platform handles location context automatically — when someone searches 'Google Ads specialist near me,' Google looks at their location and serves ads from businesses targeting that area.

This means your campaign settings matter more than your keyword list for near-me intent. Location targeting, location bid adjustments, and ad extensions like location assets and call assets all contribute to how well your ads perform on near-me queries.

Targeting Near Me Intent in Google Ads: The Right Way

Use radius targeting around your service area. Don’t just target a city — use radius targeting centered on your business location or your primary service area. For a local plumber, a 15–25 mile radius often outperforms state-level targeting.

Add location assets. Location extensions (now called location assets) display your address alongside your ad. This signals local presence to searchers with near-me intent and typically improves CTR on local queries.

Include call assets. Near-me searchers are often on mobile and ready to call. A phone number directly in the ad — click-to-call — removes friction for the most motivated searchers.

Bid adjustments by location. If you see that conversions are concentrating in specific zip codes or neighborhoods within your target area, bid higher there. Google lets you layer location bid adjustments on top of your base bids.

Don’t bid on 'near me' as a keyword. It’s a common mistake. Google’s Smart Bidding and location targeting already handle this. Bidding on 'near me' as a keyword phrase wastes budget on unqualified queries.

What Near Me Optimization Looks Like for Service Businesses

For a plumbing company: radius targeting at 20 miles, higher bids on emergency service hours, location and call assets enabled, campaigns structured around high-intent service terms rather than informational queries.

For a dental practice: radius at 10–15 miles, dayparting to align with office hours, call tracking to measure phone leads, bid adjustments for the zip codes immediately surrounding the practice.

For a law firm: broader radius (clients travel further), location assets with office address and hours, click-to-call on mobile, campaigns built around practice area keywords with clear local intent signals.

The underlying principle is the same: understand what “near me” means in the context of your buyer’s decision and make it as easy as possible for them to reach you at the moment of intent.
